Leberecht

Leberecht found Mikhail through the smoke and destruction of the battle as the Kurakin defense began to stabilize. The momentum for the enemy attack slowed and a wall of black coats held the line and took down any red coats who charged them.

The fighting quieted in Leberecht’s ears. There were still screams from the injured and explosions from the main fighting, but because the army was no longer falling back, there was less roaring and chaos to the sounds. Leberecht’s mind could finally think clearly.

He found the Kurakin command and stumbled into the circle of officers. He moved straight to Mikhail and made to ask how he could help. Leberecht didn’t know what he could do for the army but expected Mikhail to have a use for him.

Instead, the Kurakin general looked straight through the ambassador, as if he wasn’t there.

He said something in the southern language to his officers as a giant artillery volley erupted from the front. The ground shook under the gathering’s feet. Mikhail was unbothered by the deafening roar and never ceased his orders.

He stepped forward and pushed around Leberecht. “Out of my way,” he said in the northern tongue before switching back to the Kurakin language.

Leberecht was jostled by the other officers as they followed their commander. The ambassador stumbled to the side and ended up outside the circle. He was left alone with his boots sinking in the mud as the Kurakin leader marched away.

Leberecht swallowed his pride and followed. He planned to wait until Mikhail had a break in the action and then offer his help again. The enemy had other ideas.

There was a flash of color in front of Leberecht, just beyond the distant edge of the camp. A burst of Brunian red screamed out of the southern trees and smashed into the defensive line’s flank. More enemy followed them and rushed further up the side of the camp.

Too many enemies.

The Brunians had more soldiers. They were going to envelop the camp.

Leberecht didn’t need to be a general to see the danger to the Kurakin line now. They had only just stabilized the fighting and were holding the enemy at bay. But now the flank was open and more Brunian soldiers appeared every moment.

The commanders around Mikhail dispersed, some running straight towards the exposed sections of the line to try and save the situation, others moving to the opposite flank. Leberecht looked after the latter group and saw more horror to the north. There were black and yellow coats flanking the enemy lines on the Kurakin left as well.

The battle caved in on itself despite the screaming orders from the commanders. Mikhail stood in the center of it all, only a few feet from Leberecht. The defenders were pushed back and compressed, compacted into their commanding general.

The lines broke apart.

There was no actual sound that accompanied the shift in the battle, but Leberecht imagined a gigantic crack echoing across the Kurakin formation. Mikhail ran towards his horse as the Horde defenders fell backwards and began to flee.
